Music Video Theory and Pete Fraser's '10 Step Guide'
Theory:
|
How it applies to my video:
|
Semiotics: Roland Barthes.
The study of signs and symbols as well as signifiers in words, images and
sounds.
|
The context of my song and video is centred around a space launch,
therefore all of the imagery and references to space and other scientific
symbols will reinforce the lyrics, signifying lines with suitable images. For
example, cut to a shot of the mission control centre when the lyrics ‘it’s
grown quite quiet here in mission control’ are said.
|
Narrative: Todorov. How
narrative structures work.
|
Todorov’s theory recognises the narrative structure of equilibrium,
disruption, recognition of disruption, attempts to repair disruption, and a
restored equilibrium. This isn’t really relevant to my video, as I am using
juxtaposition as a key feature of my narrative. However, in theory, the
acting of the ‘mission control’ half of my structure should demonstrate
Todorov’s theory, as their facial expressions grow from calm, to panicked, to
hopeful, back to relieved; mirroring the tempo of the song.
|
Structuralism: Levi-Strauss.
How hidden rules, norms and traditions govern structure.
|
The theory of binary opposition will be maintained in my video, as I intend
to use a split screen editing technique to contrast the happiness and tranquillity
of the ‘spacemen’ with the panic and stress of ‘mission control’.
|
Genre: Steve Neale. Why
genres are created, changed, endured or declined.
|
The genre of indie rock is changed in a way in this song. Public
Service Broadcasting sample recordings from famous radio pieces in their
music. One of their albums is suitably named ‘Inform, Educate, Entertain’. This
practice is massively unconventional- however, after explaining my pitch and
the nature of the song to my peers, I have yet to find someone who dislikes
their music or at least rejects the view that it is very unique and clever.
|
Post-Modernism: Jean
Baudrillard. Identifying social distinctions as opposed to pre-20th
century pop culture.
|
There will be a big difference between my video and other music
videos in the mainstream. Most notably through my use of child actors and
lack of performance- a key convention in most music videos.
|
Audience Reception: Stuart
Hall. How meanings are placed into texts, and how people read them.
|
The initial reading of my video should be the excitement and joy of a
launch to the moon. However, a contrast with panicked expressions of
admin/tech staff will suggest a more negative meaning of risk and danger.
