Conventions of Indie Rock.

Image
Similarly to generic conventions of music videos as a whole, music videos of the indie rock genre take each code of Goodwin's theory and general textual analysis and place a bold convention upon it to establish it strongly as conformative of the indie rock genre. Lyrics and Music. Typically in indie rock, lyrics often follow a somewhat liberal stance, often openly criticising right wing governments and ideology, for example, The Smiths ' The Queen is Dead ' with lines like 'the church who'll snatch your money' and 'I broke into the palace' are massively critical of the monarchy and essentially the conservatives who support them. Morrisey, lead singer of The Smiths, was massively vocal in criticising Thatcher in the 80s, as well as idealising other seemingly liberal ideologies, such as vegetarianism with the record ' Meat is Murder '. The Smiths were so famously liberal that even when Conservative ex PM David Cameron claimed The Smiths to be...

Tame Impala, The Less I Know The Better, Analysis.

Image
Tame Impala, The Less I Know The Better. Textual Analysis. 1- Lyrics.  2- Music.  3- Genre.  4- Camerawork. 5- Editing.  6- Intertextuality. 7- Narrative and performance.  8- Representation. Lyrics. Lyrically, the song explains a story of jealousy and messy teenage romance. It references rumours 'someone said they live together', frustration 'don't make me wait forever', jealousy 'not the greatest feeling ever, and longing 'I don't suppose you could convince your lover to change it's mind'. Notice also how the 'narrator' refers to the lover as an 'it'- particularly significant when the video features the lover in question to be a literal monkey. Enhancing the motif of jealousy. The simplicity of the lyrics works to an advantage, as they are relatively easy to understand, analyse, and remember.  Music. The music is conventional to the band Tame Impala itself, strengthened by a steady bassline, and...

Music Video Codes and Conventions.

Image
Andrew Goodwin developed a theory of music videos, covering six key areas which are vital to cover in order to ensure an effective video is executed:  1- Thought beats, structure and speed and beat should represented visually.  2- Narrative and performance, videos serve as an advertisement, must be easy to repeatedly watch  3- Star image, promote the artist. 4- Relation of visuals to song. disjuncture, to ignore, amplify or illustrate.  5- Technical codes.  6- Reference to the notion of looking Thought Beats.  Thought beats define the processes of allowing the song's structure, speed and beat to be visually represented throughout the video. In this example, thought beats are cleverly timed through the medium of several explosions and 'Rube Goldberg' type engineering. The explosions occur in time with each cymbal crash, often striking a nerve with the view in terms of aesthetic satisfaction. What makes this video different is that it was shot i...

The History of Music Videos.

Image
The First Music Video. Bessie Smith, St Louis Blues is one of the earliest known music videos, released into theatres in 1932, after the songs initial release in 1929. Although this was the first official music video, Thomas Edison developed the Kinetophone in 1895, a device which showed moving images, while a phonograph played sound separately. The 'Dickson Experimental Sound Film' was never released, due to the failure of the Kinetophone in the market. The Most Watched Videos on YouTube. The most viewed music videos on YouTube is Gangnam Style by Psy.  With over 2billion views. The song rose to the top of the charts in 2012 and became an instant hit at junior school birthday parties. The video became an internet sensation due to its quirky narrative and iconic dance routine. It is part of what we call 'meme culture', meaning it is a popular choice for internet parodies. Removing the bias of YouTube becoming a platform in 2005, meaning post-2005 aud...

Seeking Permission

Image
I have chosen to centre my project around a band called Public Service Broadcasting , and their song 'Go!'.  I got contact of the bands manager through the 'contact us' tab on the bottom of the bands website, and they wrote back to me granting permission within 24 hours, which I was very grateful for. An advantage of choosing an indie band to base your work on is that generally they are more understanding of students' lack of funds, and often care more for evoking artistic and creative responses to their own work, rather than gaining financial credit from it. Public Service Broadcasting were very kind to grant me permission to use their song, and I hope I do not let them regret it.

SWOT Evaluation of AS Blog

Image
My AS blog went well to the extent that it clearly and effectively presented my research and planning in a clear and accessible format. However, it was heavily criticised that many of my posts were over-complicated, and I recognise myself that I invested much more time and energy into the quality of the posts over than the quantity of material covered, leading to a frantic rush to complete the blog in the run up to the deadline, the standard of my posts were inconsistent throughout. My directors influences post is one of my favourite explorations on my AS blog as it is one of the few that is simple and to the point. Picking three directors with three of their films gave me an opportunity to explain similarities and differences from the chosen films and my own to my 'audience' as well as further provoking my own inspiration and creativity. My textual analysis of American Psycho I felt was also effective due to its format. The prezi platform allowed me to explore ...

Introduction

Image
I'm working solo on this project again, as having total control over my ideas and their execution is most important to me as a creative director. I am beyond excited to begin this piece of coursework, and have been gathering inspiration for a few months now. I will be creating a music video, along with a promotional digipak and magazine advertisement.
