Digipak Art
This is the first draft cover for my digipak. I created it using Adobe Fireworks. I processed and colour corrected the image to make it more vibrant, and chose a bold 'bell gothic std' font, inspired by the real album cover, which uses a sans serif font.
I chose an image from the shooting day that didn't feature any of the young talents as the band themselves don't generally contribute to the idea of 'star image'. Their own album cover is a landscape, with no presence of humans.
I feel that this image represents the video nicely, a cardboard robot instead of real humans adds a sense of anonymity, as well as various props highlighting the absence of humanity, like space.
This is another potential idea for a digipak cover. I thought the boy running went well visually with the bold statement of 'race'.
The bold title of the album is in your face and spaced out in a way that sticks in the readers mind, it is an eye catching and memorable. Again, the typography is simplistic and bold in a sans serif font, illustrating the concept that obnoxious and floral imagery isn't prioritized by the band.
I'd like to perhaps make the text transparent with a black background so that the red background image highlights the text, and then my digipak would be the sleeve with the text cut out, and the background a removable lyric booklet, similar to 'the xx, self titled' album, shown below.
Here is the first draft for my above pitched idea. I'm not sure if I like the font, so perhaps I'll conduct a survey- I feel it should be bigger and bolder.
Also perhaps the red on black is too harsh. I could change the black to white, or choose a blue or purple toned image to lighten the mood. Black and red melt together too easily and connote too much negativity, in my opinion.
I definitely think this font is better, however the picture is still too dark and doesn't stand out enough.
I'm going to replace the image with a pink or blue themed image that will stand out against the dark black sleeve with better contrast.
I printed off the title of the album in a bold sans serif font and taped it to a blank black crafts card. I then cut out the letters using a craft blade.
I used an app called 'print to size' to print off square images exactly 14cm squared to use as the cover of my lyric booklet.
Overall I am pleased with this prototype, I think it is creative and reflects the artistic credibility of the band.
